The "Frenemy" Paradox: Loving and Loathing Your Longest-Tenured Friend
We all have that one friend. You know the one—the person you’ve known for what feels like a lifetime, the one who was introduced by a mutual friend back when life looked completely different. You share a massive history, inside jokes that span decades, and yes, even matching ink.
She is equal parts wonderful and an absolute nightmare. Let’s call her what she is: the ultimate frenemy.
If you’ve been following our chats or happened to catch the saga of our matching tattoo, you already know this dynamic is a rollercoaster. But today, we’re unpacking the special brand of chaos that comes with keeping a "rough" friend around for the long haul.
The Copycat Chronicles (and the Military Wife Pivot)
Let’s start with the classic behavior that makes you want to roll your eyes clear into the next dimension. For years, she swore up and down that she would never marry a military guy. The lifestyle was too hard, the deployments too unpredictable—hard pass.
Fast forward to when I married Caleb. Suddenly, the script flips. Not only does she change her tune, but she turns around and marries an Army warrant officer. Smh. You can’t make this stuff up.
And then there was the baby name situation. If you’ve been around awhile, you know that Caleb and I always wanted to name our first boy Luke. So what does she do? She names her firstborn son Lucas. Coincidence? Absolutely not.
When the Going Gets Tough... She Gets Going
Friendship is tested in the trenches, right? Well, when Caleb was deployed on his rotation to Korea during our first year of marriage—arguably one of the loneliest, most stressful stretches—was she there to check in, bring coffee, or offer a shoulder?
Nope. Total radio silence.
Dealing with a friend who is consistently unreliable when life gets real is exhausting. It makes you reevaluate why you’re holding onto the relationship in the first place, especially when you realize you’ve been doing all the heavy lifting in the friendship department.
Why Do We Keep Them Around?
So why keep her in your inner circle? Because human relationships are never black and white.
Breaking the Shell: As frustrating as she can be, she has a way of dragging you out of your comfort zone. When you're stuck in your head or routine, she’s the one forcing you out the door.
The Good Times: Despite the history, the shade-throwing, and the eye-rolling moments, there genuinely have been incredible times. When it’s good, it’s really good—the kind of gut-laughing fun that only someone who has known you for years can unlock.
Navigating a long-term friendship with someone who drives you crazy is a masterclass in boundary setting and selective amnesia. You take the good, you brace yourself for the petty, and you learn to protect your peace.
Have you ever had a lifelong friend who tests your patience like this, but somehow manages to stick around anyway? How do you draw the line between playful chaos and toxic behavior?
